We just got finished with the NFL Combine so what better thing to do then break down another star athlete? For those of you who don’t know, Baker Mayfield, the QB of Oklahoma, had a bit of a run-in with law enforcement recently (see below from Barstool Sports). So let’s see the scouting report.
Pros: He’s not afraid to take risks, which could also be a negative, but you can’t play scared. Sure the cops have you surrounded, but you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. He also has great vision, he sees when coverage is too tight, and he has to make a play. He can also take a hit as the video shows clearly.
Cons: Acceleration. Very poor. Some of that has to do with the hesitation (and extreme inebriation. Decision making is an issue. You want a guy to take chances, but he has to be able to decipher when it’s time to do that.
Verdict: Decision-making is an issue, as well as acceleration. However, he’s not afraid to take risks, can take the tough hits, great vision, and has all the intangibles (public intoxication, running from police, etc.) that makes a solid pro.
Bad look for Baker Mayfield. REAL bad look. No not the fact that he was getting detained in the first place, every NFL prospect gets arrested, it’s like a rite of passage. If you’re not getting in some trouble with the police at some point you probably don’t even have the edge to make…
