Whenever people bring up what kills humans, they always like going for the popular topics: guns, drugs, auto accidents. However, while part of it gets included, one rarely touched on topic is drunk driving. It always seems to be left out in favor of more sensationalized things, like the six people who die of shark attacks.
However, the numbers are pretty staggering. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US, 35,092 people died in traffic related deaths in the US in 2015. Of those, 10,265 people died in crash where at least one of the drivers had a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) over the legal limit of .08. It doesn’t say how many of the drivers had under the legal limit in their system.
It’s insane though and needs more attention. Well Frito-Lay has a solution for those drinking: a Tostitos chip bag with a BAC breathalyzer in it. The bag blends technology and design to hopefully save lives. Also, regardless of how much you’ve had to drink, each of the special bags will have a UPC code you can enter into your Uber app for $10 a ride home.
This is obviously being rolled out for Superbowl weekend when the chance of drunk driving skyrockets, but I hope it continues into the future. Or, at the very least, other products jump on the bandwagon. It’s an unreported issue, that can be reduced with more initiatives like this.
