Swing And A Miss: The 1996 NHL Draft

Drafting is by no means an easy thing. Even with teams like the Red Wings, Blackhawks, and Kings, amongst many others, luck plays a major role. Every now and then there are some real stinker picks though. Ones that left fan bases and writers scratching their heads, even at the time. Every now and then though, it’s not just one, two, or three teams. It’s damn near the whole league.

Ken Campbell decided to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1996 NHL Draft by looking at how badly teams got it wrong. It does nothing but kill time, but it’s a damn good read if you have the time. The headliner of misses in this draft was Pavel Datsyuk, however, there’s many players who I didn’t realize were even drafted that year, let alone so low. You gotta be able to laugh at yourself though.
