History Made in DC

Love him or hate him Alexander Ovechkin is one of the most dynamic athletes to watch these days. The Russian winger further stamped his mark on hockey history in two ways, with one shot, what can’t this guy do?! Sorry, I might be a bit of a Russophile when it comes to hockey, and History, and life…it’s an issue. Regardless, Ovechkin is awesome.

Last night, just 35 seconds into the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ovechkin scored his 545th NHL goal. He surpasses Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard, whom he poetically tied the previous game, against the Canadiens, in Montreal. This goal also put him into the 1,000 point club, which isn’t too shabby for 31-year-old. Although, he came into the NHL at full speed, and hasn’t slowed down.

Ovechkin currently has six Rocket Richard Trophies, given to the top goal scorer each season, and was in contention for most of the years he didn’t win. He doesn’t appear to be slowing down much either. He takes a lot of heat from fans of opposing teams, and north of the border, but again, you can’t argue his place in hockey history. He’s been an institution in the modern game, and I can’t wait to see where he goes next.
