While my opportunities to use outdoor gear have been cut since moving to London, I still like to see what’s out there and what’s emerging. I am also a bit of a junkie when it comes to it, especially new stuff. Here are four things I have* to have.
ELECTRIC PIONEER BACKPACK
I actually stumbled across this while looking at sunglasses, which would have made this list if I didn’t break or lose them constantly. I read awhile back Electric was going to expand it’s offering, so this is no surprise. What is a surprise is how sharp and functional this bag appears. I have yet to see one in person, but even though another backpack is the last thing I need, I can always upgrade, right?
ICEBREAKER COMPASS LONG SLEEVE HALF ZIP HOOD
You can never have too many hoodies, or merino wool clothing. Icebreaker is one of my favorite base-layer manufacturers, and casual wear, not to mention the great socks. However, they continue to innovate and release some of the best stuff in the business. I have a Henley-style, long sleeve with a stash pocket, but the hood definitely helps for inclement weather. It’s not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
PACK SLINGS
These aren’t real yet, but holy crap I could definitely use these. After a few hours out my shoulders start to feel uncomfortable, after that I start to shift to one shoulder, then the other, then I have my thumbs under the straps to give my shoulders a break. These look awesome, and I am definitely chipping in on their Kickstarter.
SALOMON SONIC PRO
I have never really needed road running shoes as I would either use trails around Portland, or the nearby gym. However, London has presented a whole new set of issues. Mainly they think 9 am is ‘early’ for a gym to open on a Saturday. Really?! Anyway, with as much rain as they get here, I need something durable and good tread. Salomon seems to be the best choice.
