They were down twice (3-1, then 4-3), but they overcame it. Their young Defenceman made a couple mental errors, but they overcame it. Alex Burrows got robbed by yet another NHL goal review, but they overcame it. This is not a Canucks team we have seen this year.
One of the big things I saw on The Twitter and in The Provies was how Kari Lethonen was the reason for this win. However, this is a team that has made Vezina candidates out of: Peter Budaj, John Gibson, Philipp Grubauer, Mike Condon, and Frederik Andersen. Philipp FREAKING Grubauer and Mike FREAKING Condon! Condon had a plain, white mask like he was texted an hour before the game and asked if he could start.
A win is a win, and this was a great one for a team that has won twice in their last 11 games. To paraphrase Stefon from SNL, this game had everything. Burrows was playing like he was in a contract year, oh wait, but who cares, it was great to see vintage Burr. Even though he was ROBBED of a goal, he deserves praise for overall play. He was putting tremendous pressure on the forecheck and showed great speed.
I thought Markus Granlund, Sven Baertschi, Bo Horvat, and Loui Eriksson also had great games, Granlund obviously with the OT goal, but I felt like he created some chances and played well besides that. Which they had to, because once again, while the top line got on the board, they were also a minus-one.
The real story here though was Troy Stecher and Nikita Tryamkin. Both had a couple errors, but that is expected with young players. They need playing time to learn, and at least the young Defenceman on this team are getting that chance (Stecher TOI 21:43, Tryamkin TOI 16:07). While Tryamkin crushed Jamie Benn, Stecher stole the show.
(Anyone get a plate number on that Big Rig?)
Stecher, with time winding down, the extra-attacker on, Stecher got the puck he had been clamoring for (via stick-taps and verbal requests), made a nifty move and fired home the tying goal. Not a bad way to further ingratiate yourself with a fan base and tally your first NHL goal. Let Stechermania go through the roof!
In all seriousness it games like this why I stay up late, 4,100 miles (7,500 km) away and watch this team. I will always watch this team, but it’s games like this that make the lack of sleep much more worth it. So I will close this out with WHATCHYA GONNA DO, WHEN STECHERMANIA RUNS WILD ON YOU?!
P.S. I can’t wait until her turns into VanCity Stecher and comes out for warmups with a cWo title belt.
